Where breathing, sleep, and jaw development meet

What is Airway Orthodontics?

Airway orthodontics looks beyond tooth alignment to consider how the structure of your jaws and airway affects the way you breathe and sleep. When the upper jaw is narrow, or when the lower jaw sits too far back, the airway can become restricted. Over time that restriction can contribute to mouth breathing, snoring, disrupted sleep, and in children, difficulties with focus and energy during the day.

At Sharon Orthodontics, we evaluate airway and jaw development as part of every orthodontic assessment. When we identify an airway concern, we work with you to understand whether orthodontic treatment can help expand the arches, improve tongue posture, and create more room for the airway to function as it should.

Structural changes that can have a lasting effect on health and quality of life

Benefits of Airway-Focused Treatment

Addressing airway concerns through orthodontic treatment is not a guarantee of any specific health outcome. What we can do is address the structural factors within our scope and coordinate with the right providers when broader care is needed.

  • Improved Nasal Breathing

Expanding a narrow upper arch can create more room for nasal airflow, making it easier to breathe through the nose rather than the mouth during the day and while asleep.

  • Earlier Intervention, Easier Treatment

Treating jaw development concerns while the bones are still growing typically requires less complex intervention than waiting until growth is complete. Early evaluation opens options that may not be available later.

  • Better Foundation for Comprehensive Treatment

When airway and jaw structure are addressed in Phase 1, Phase 2 treatment with full braces or aligners is often more straightforward. Teeth have more room to move into alignment, and the bite relationship is more stable.

Who May Benefit from Airway Orthodontics?

Airway-focused treatment is most often recommended for children, because the jaws are still growing and respond well to guided expansion. However, adults with long-standing breathing or sleep concerns related to jaw structure may also be candidates.

Children who breathe through their mouths, snore regularly, grind their teeth at night, or whose growth pattern suggests a narrow upper jaw are good candidates for an early evaluation. The AAO recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age seven in part because interceptive treatment at that stage can address structural issues before they become harder to manage. In adults, airway orthodontics is typically coordinated alongside a physician or sleep specialist, particularly when obstructive sleep apnea is a concern.

Jaw Expander Appliance Therapy

Technology Used for Airway Orthodontics

Palatal expanders gently widen the upper jaw over a period of weeks to months. By creating more room across the arch, an expander can improve nasal airflow, reduce overcrowding, and support a more favorable jaw relationship as the permanent teeth come in.

Myofunctional appliances address the muscle patterns that influence jaw development. If the tongue rests in a low position, or if lips and cheeks are creating pressure that narrows the arches, a myofunctional appliance encourages healthier resting posture and helps reinforce the changes made by other orthodontic treatment.

Dr. Sahar selects appliances based on each patient's anatomy, age, and airway goals. Treatment timing matters, and we will walk you through what we recommend and why before anything begins.

YOUR TREATMENT EXPERIENCE WITH SHARON ORTHODONTICS

What to Expect During Your Visit

Your first appointment will include a thorough evaluation of your bite, jaw structure, and airway. We may take records including photographs and digital scans. If airway-focused treatment is recommended, we will explain which appliances we suggest, how long treatment is likely to take, and what your involvement will look like at home. Appliance therapy requires daily wear and, in some cases, activations that a parent performs at home on a schedule we provide.

  • Before Your Appointment

    • Bring any previous orthodontic or dental records if you have them.
    • Note any sleep concerns, snoring, or mouth breathing habits to mention at the visit.
    • Your child does not need to prepare anything specific — we keep the evaluation comfortable and low-pressure.
  • After Your Appointment

    • We will review findings and walk through any recommended treatment options before you leave.
    • If an expander or myofunctional appliance is recommended, we will explain activation, wear time, and what to expect.
    • We will coordinate with your child's general dentist or pediatrician as needed throughout treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The AAO recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age seven. That appointment gives us a chance to assess jaw development and airway alongside tooth eruption. If we notice anything that warrants earlier attention, we will let you know. Not every child will need airway-focused treatment, but identifying concerns early means more options are available.

  • A palatal expander fits across the roof of the mouth and applies gentle outward pressure to gradually widen the upper jaw. Most expanders are activated by a small turn each day or every few days, following a schedule we provide. The expansion process typically takes several weeks, followed by a retention period to allow the new bone to stabilize.

  • A myofunctional appliance is a removable device worn for a set number of hours each day, usually including sleep. It encourages the tongue to rest in a higher position, supports proper lip seal, and applies gentle guidance to the jaws during growth. These appliances work best when worn consistently and are most effective in growing children.

  • Orthodontic treatment can address structural factors that contribute to airway restriction, such as a narrow upper arch or a recessed lower jaw. Whether that translates to improvement in snoring or sleep quality depends on the individual and the underlying cause. We do not diagnose or treat sleep disorders, but we can work alongside your physician or a sleep specialist when that level of coordination is appropriate.

  • Most airway-focused orthodontic treatment is most effective during childhood and early adolescence, when the jaws are still growing and more responsive to guided expansion. Adults can still benefit from evaluation, and certain treatment options may be available depending on the degree of jaw development and the nature of the airway concern. A thorough assessment will help determine what is possible.
